Wallets Marts held their annual October beef-breeding cattle sale along with their fortnightly sale of store cattle in Castle Douglas yesterday. Twenty-two store heifers sold to a top of 206.4p per kg and an average of 182.6p, while 26 store bullocks peaked at 216p and levelled at 194.9p.
In the beef-breeding cattle section 24 heifers with bull calves-at-foot sold to £2250 and averaged £1997.92, while 13 heifers with heifer calves peaked at £2700 and levelled at £2011.54.
John Swan Ltd sold 41 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 251p and an average of 216p (-5.9p on the week), while 25 prime bullocks peaked at 239p and levelled at 211.6p (+0.4p).
In the rough ring 79 beef cows averaged 117.9p (no change) and 6 clean OTM cattle levelled at 153p.
The firm also sold 2553 prime lambs to a top of £85 per head and 179p per kg to average £62.87 and 142p (-1p).
The 1263 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £91 for Texels and average £54.31 and light ewes peak at £61 for Lleyns and level at £38.01.
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 17 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 223.5p and an average of 198.1p (+3.8p), while 25 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 224.5p and levelled at 197.9p (+11.7p). Four prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 150.5p and averaged 146p (-5.5p). Forty-five prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 219.5p and averaged 178.4p (+14.2p), while 27 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 169.5p and levelled at 131.5p (-6.6p).
In the rough ring 123 beef cows averaged 123.2p (-3.9p) and 219 dairy cows levelled at 84.2p (+1.4p). Eleven bulls averaged 105.4p (-24.5p).
The firm also sold 2589 prime lambs to a top of £90 and 204.5p to average 138.8p (-10.7p).
The 392 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £104 for Texels.
Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 2164 prime lambs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £80 and 169.1p to average 137.1p (-6.8p).
There were also 776 cast sheep forward when ewes sold to £140 for a pen of Texels and £52.50 for Blackfaces to average £52.58 overall (+£2.62).
Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 15 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 254p and an average of 236.2p (no change), while 11 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 277p and levelled at 216.3p (+4.1p). Eleven prime, B&W bullocks sold to 154p and averaged 145p (-2p).
In the rough ring 18 beef cows averaged 125.6p (+3.1p) and 72 dairy cows levelled at 89.5p (no change).
A small show of five dairy cattle sold to £1500 for a Holstein Friesian heifer and averaged £1325.
