It was a world record breaking day for the Limousin breed at Carlisle on Saturday when auctioneers Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold the eighteen-month-old pedigree Limousin bull Trueman Jagger from breeders Henry Savage & Sons, Altnamackin, Newry, Co. Down for 140,000gns (£147,000).

At the pre-sale show Trueman Jagger was placed as the Overall Supreme Champion and his hefty price sets a new UK and European all-breeds bovine record.

At the end of the day's selling 85 pedigree Limousin bulls averaged £8,709, a new UK all-breeds record that was up by over £3,200 on the year for a 67 per cent clearance.

Averages: 20 seniors £5,796; 36 intermediates £10,717; 29 juniors £8,226.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd held their two-day October sale of spring and autumn suckled calves in Newton Stewart on Friday and Saturday. An increased entry of 274 extra calves sold to average £817.16 per head (-£13.49 on the year) and 218.3p per kg (-10.6p).

Averages: £848.44 (203.8p) for 736 autumn-born heifers; £940.32 (213.8p) for 949 autumn-born bullocks; £656.54 (233.2p) for 509 spring-born heifers; £730.39 (240.4p) for 670 spring-born bullocks.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 39 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 255p and an average of 226p (+10p on the week), while 17 prime bullocks peaked at 249p and levelled at 209.9p (-1.7p). Five prime bulls sold to 166p and averaged 156.2p.

In the rough ring 89 beef cows averaged 120.1p (+2.2p) and 5 OTM cattle levelled at 172.6p (+19.6p).

There were also 1561 prime lambs that sold to £82 per head and 190.2p per kg to average £65 and 144.4p (+2p).

The 658 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £91 for Texels and average £62, while light ewes peaked at £69 for Cheviots and levelled at £42.

The firm also sold 15 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 226.5p and an average of 183.2p (-15p), while 21 prime beef-bred bullocks peaked at 231.5p and levelled at 196.3p (-1.5p). Three prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 161.5p and averaged 147.8p (+1.8p).

Forty-eight prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 223.5p and averaged 186.4p (+8p), while 33 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 164.5p and levelled at 133p (+1.5p).

In the rough ring 117 beef cows averaged 124p (+0.8p) and 249 dairy cows levelled at 91.7p (+7.5p). Twenty-one bulls averaged 109.1p (+3.7p).

The firm also sold 1996 prime lambs to a top of £85.50 and 194.6p to average 145.6p (+6.8p).

The 261 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £79 for Suffolks and average £64.05, while light ewes peaked at £57 for Hill Cheviots and levelled at £38.95.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 1464 prime lambs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £81 and 176.2p to average 135.1p (-1.9p).

There were also 664 cast sheep forward when ewes were easier on the week selling to £133 for a pen of Texels and £47.50 for Blackfaces.

Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 22 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 253p and an average of 230.7p (-3.1p), while 14 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 226p and levelled at 210.3p (-3.1p). Ten prime, B&W bullocks sold to 147p and averaged 140.2p (-2p).

In the rough ring 65 beef cows averaged 118.5p and 28 dairy cows levelled at 85.1p.

The firm also sold 1837 prime lambs to a top of £79 and 170.2p to average 141.6p (+5.4p).

The 664 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £134.50 for Texels and £50.50 for Blackfaces.
