Harrison & Hetherington sold 56 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 247p per kg and an average of 217.1p (-6.1p on the week), while 29 prime bullocks peaked at 231p and levelled at 210.5p (-0.5p).

In the rough ring 65 beef cows averaged 108.7p (+4.3p).

The firm also sold 2359 prime lambs to a top of £96 per head and 231.3p per kg to average £73.31 and 166.7p (+6.6p).

The 785 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £100 for Texels and average £55.14, while light ewes peaked at £71 for CheviotXs and levelled at £52.18.

The firm also held their Christmas show and sale of prime-stock in Carlisle yesterday when 10 heifers sold to a top of 400p and averaged 247.4p (+80.2p), while 26 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 440p and levelled at 231.6p (+48.4p). Eight prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 139.5p and averaged 130.6p (-0.9p). Twenty-eight prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 209.5p and averaged 171.1p (+2.1p), while 41 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 170.5p and levelled at 134.4p (+8.7p).

In the rough ring 107 beef cows averaged 113.6p (+4.1p) and 126 dairy cows levelled at 74.3p (-3.8p).

The firm also sold 2904 prime lambs to a top of £125 and 301.2p to average 162.3p (+4.5p).

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd held their Christmas show and sale at Ayr yesterday when 30 pens of three prime lambs were entered. The championship went to Mr J Cousar, Howcommon Farm, Craigie for a pen of Beltex that fetched £165 or 336.7p, with the show lambs averaging 182.1p and the 2139 commercial lambs levelling at 159.1p (+5.1p).

There were also 735 cast sheep that met a cheaper trade with ewes selling to £119.50 for Texels and £52 for Blackfaces.
