Prices for dairy products at this week's Global Dairy trade (GDT) auction fell by an average by 2.9 per cent on the previous sale. Cheddar values were down by 5.6 percent, butter prices fell by 2.8 per cent and skim milk powder was back 2.5 per cent.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 7 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of £1367.30 per head and 230p per kg to average £1270.44 and 219.8p, while 3 prime bullocks peaked at £987.70 and 166p to level at £935.03 and 164p. A prime bull fetched £1115.85 or 173p.

In the rough ring 46 beef cows averaged 129.5p and 138 dairy cows levelled at 86.5p. Six bulls averaged 118.4p.

With many farmers taking advantage of the great spell of weather there were only 6 dairy cattle forward that sold to £1050 for a freshly-calved Holstein Friesian heifer and averaged £897.

Wallets Marts Ltd sold 1017 prime hoogs in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £105 per head and 227.3p per kg to average 191.4p (+7.9p on the week).

The firm also had 329 cast sheep forward when ewes sold to £97.50 for Texels and £78.50 for Blackfaces.
