Market round-up

Wallets Marts sold 253 store heifers in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £1210 per head and 259.8p per kg to average £808.40 and 204.8p (-1.4p on the fortnight), while 355 store bullocks (that included 142 native-bred) peaked at £1120 and 263.3p to level at £856.76 and 213.3p (-11.4p).

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 1565 prime hoggs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £97 per head and 209.1p per kg to average 173.6p (-16.6p on the week).

A large show of 584 cast sheep were also cheaper on the week with ewes selling to £144 for a pen of Texels and £73 for Blackfaces.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 67 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 243p and an average of 204.1p (-6.1p), while 26 prime bullocks peaked at 240p and levelled at 192.4p (-9p).

In the rough ring 23 beef cows averaged 123.4p (-1.2p).

There were also 1890 prime hoggs that sold to £110 and 205p to average 176p (-14p), while 9 prime lambs peaked at £110 and 220p to level at £106 and 218p (-9p).

The 351 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £109 for Suffolks and average £83, while light ewes peaked at £87 for Cheviots and levelled at £61.

The firm also sold 17 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 209.5p and an average of 187.3p (+2.2p), while 19 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 202.5p and levelled at 171.5p (-2.7p). Four prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 154.5p and averaged 147.5p (+12p). Twenty-nine prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 219.5p and averaged 176.8p (+16.8p), while 48 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 158.5p and levelled at 134.9p (+6.6p).

In the rough ring 77 beef cows averaged 121.4p (+4.7p) and 223 dairy cows levelled at 89.8p (+4.9p). Seven bulls averaged 135.2p (+5p).

There were also 1508 prime hoggs that sold to £115.80 and 252.9p to average 176.7p (-12.9p).

A small show of 58 cast sheep sold to £110 for Texel ewes.

Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 19 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 246p and an average of 228p (+2.6p), while 4 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 222p and levelled at 192p (-8.1p). Nine prime, B&W bullocks sold to 131p and averaged 121.5p (-6.5p).

In the rough ring 18 beef cows averaged 117.5p (+1.1p) and 28 dairy cows levelled at 89.4p (+1p). A couple of bulls averaged 100.5p.

The firm also sold 1485 prime hoggs to a top of £101.50 and 210p to average 174.5p (-19p).

The 270 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £153.50 for a Texel and £52 for Blackfaces.
