Market round-up

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 12 prime heifers at Whitefordhill Mart near Ayr yesterday to a top of £1270.20 per head and 219p per kg to average £1136.13 and 212.5p, while a couple of prime bullocks peaked at £1100.90 and 214p to level at £1096.15 and 207.8p.

In the rough ring 37 beef cows averaged 131.7p and 112 dairy cows levelled at 89.3p. Fourteen bulls averaged 122p.

The firm also had 22 dairy cattle forward when 10 in-milk sold to £1400 for a Friesian heifer and averaged £1066, while 8 that were due to calve at grass levelled at £663. Four Friesian heifers averaged £360.

Wallets Marts had 356 prime hoggs forward at their weekly sale in Castle Douglas yesterday when heavy and export types showed the biggest drop in values on the week. Top prices on the day were £94.50 per head and 192.2p per kg with the overall average levelling at 166.1p (-8.2p on the week).

There were also 171 cast sheep that sold at similar rates to last week with ewes peaking at £111 for Suffolks, £82.50 for Mules and £70.50 for Blackfaces.
