The Board of Directors has announced that the preferred bidders for the business of Caledonian Marts (Stirling) Ltd is well-known, Stirlingshire-based livestock dealers, the Firm of John, Brian and Steven Gilvear.

James Cullens, MD of Caledonian Marts said: "There are a few procedural aspects to deal with in the short term and it is probably going to be mid to late April before the conclusion of the deal is made, but in the meantime it is business as usual. This news will secure the mart and its business for the foreseeable future and allow the business to flourish."

Wallets Marts sold 156 store heifers in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £1400 per head and 263.5p per kg to average £931.60 and 221.2p (no change on the previous sale), while 105 store bullocks peaked at £1175 and 290p to level at £941.57 and 225.8p (-4.8p).

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 2041 prime hoggs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £95 per head and 229.2p per kg to average 180.8p (-7.9p).

The firm also had 375 cast sheep forward when ewes sold to £155.50 for a Charollais and £86.50 for Blackfaces.

John Swan Ltd sold 58 prime heifers at their Easter show and sale in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 282p for the champion and an average of 220.2p (+8.7p), while 43 prime bullocks peaked at 260p for the reserve champion and levelled at 219.5p (+9.5p).

In the rough ring 23 beef-type cows averaged 121.2p (n/c) and 6 clean OTM cattle levelled at 166p (+3p).

The firm also sold 1789 prime hoggs to a top of £116 and 220p to average £82.28 and 187p (-6p).

The 215 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £120 for Texels and average £80.18, while light ewes peaked at £110 for Cheviots and levelled at £66.53.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 16 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 235.5p and an average of 193.8p (+16.3p), while 36 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 233.5p and levelled at 195.1p (-3.6p). Twenty-four prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 236.5p and averaged 189.6p (-5.4p), while 21 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 169.5p and levelled at 145.7p (-9.5p).

In the rough ring 58 beef cows averaged 149.8p (+17.4p) and 139 dairy cows levelled at 104.7p (+2p). Four bulls averaged 118.3p (-12.5p).

The firm also sold 1575 prime hoggs to a top of £113.80 and 257.4p to average 181.4p (-8.8p), while 15 prime lambs peaked at £117.80 and 214.3p to level at 183.5p.

A small show of 96 cast sheep saw ewes sell to £138 for Texels and £95.50 for Hill Cheviots.
