Market round-up
The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart sold 41 store heifers in Dumfries yesterday to a top of 241p per kg and an average of 208p, while 75 store, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 248.6p and levelled at 226.8p. Seventeen store, B&W bullocks sold to 171p and averaged 155.9p.
Caledonian Marts sold 110 store heifers at Stirling yesterday to a top of 258p and an average of 223p, while 132 store, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 298p and levelled at 232p. Eleven store, B&W bullocks sold to 165p and averaged 150p.
John Swan Ltd sold 37 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 244p and an average of 222.2p (+5.4p on the week), while 30 prime bullocks peaked at 231p and levelled at 217.9p (-7.2p).
In the rough ring 50 beef-type cows averaged 127p (+3.5p) and 12 clean, OTM cattle levelled at 179.8p (-1.2p).
The firm also sold 2821 prime hoggs to a top of £113 per head and 218p per kg to average 191p (+1p).
The 743 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £159 for a Texel and £113 for Cheviots to average £94.94 overall (+£8.31).
Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 1158 prime hoggs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £102 and 218.6p to average 186.1p (+0.6p).
The 605 cast sheep forward sold to £157 for a pen of Texel rams, while ewes peaked at £130 for a pen of Suffolks and £81.50 for Blackfaces. The overall average levelled at £80.35 (-£2.19).
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 19 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 233.5p and an average of 204.6p (+5.5p), while 26 prime bullocks peaked at 234.5p and levelled at 207.6p (+4.2p). Forty-two prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 225.5p and averaged 200p (-2.2p), while 61 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 187.5p and levelled at 157.8p (-3.6p).
In the rough ring 84 beef cows averaged 127.9p (+2.5p) and 261 dairy cows levelled at 97.4p (+4p). Nine bulls averaged 107.3p (-9.1p).
The firm also sold 2258 prime hoggs to a top of £115.80 and 252.1p to average 198p (+6.9p).
The 115 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £127.50 for Texels and £87.50 for Hill Cheviots.
Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 19 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 255p and an average of 229.8p (+2.1p), while 10 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 243p and levelled at 209.7p (+1.1p). Twenty-four prime, B&W bullocks sold to 168p and averaged 161.2p.
In the rough ring 28 beef cows averaged 137p (+5.3p) and 32 dairy cows levelled at 103p (+15p).
The firm also sold 1926 prime hoggs to a top of £98 and 219.2p to average 188.5p (+2p).
Cast ewes sold to £157.50 for Texels and £64.14 for Blackfaces to average £86.08 overall.
