The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart sold 21 store heifers in Dumfries yesterday to a top of 254.4p per kg and an average of 205.4p, while 40 store bullocks peaked at 275.6p and levelled at 236.9p.

John Swan Ltd held their summer show and sale of prime cattle in St Boswells yesterday when 51 heifers sold to 260p for the champion, a BBX from Messrs JS Baird & Son, Lurdenlaw, and averaged 224.6p (+13.1p on the week). The reserve ticket was awarded to a bullock from Messrs W Fleming, Mosstower which went on to fetch 245p, slightly less than the top-priced bullock that was bid to 250p. Overall, the 27 bullocks to go under the auctioneer's hammer levelled at 218.1p (+5p). Three prime bulls averaged 208.5p.

In the rough ring 43 OTM cattle averaged 142.2p (+7.6p).

The firm also sold 1192 prime lambs to a top of £101 per head and 213.6p per kg to average £85 and 197.2p (+9p), while 162 hoggs levelled at £71 and 147,6p (+3p).

The 254 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £131 for Texels and average £81.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 20 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 214.5p and an average of 191.4p (+6.6p), while 14 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 213.5p and levelled at 196.8p (+8.3p). Two prime dairy-bred bullocks averaged 157.5p (+20.7p). Twenty-four prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 214.5p and averaged 182.4p (+3.7p), while 50 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 169.5p and levelled at 141.2p (+0.6p).

In the rough ring 73 beef cows averaged 134.9p (+1.4p) and 154 dairy cows levelled at 110.2p (+2.7p). Eight bulls averaged 135.6p (-2.8p).

The firm also sold 1681 prime lambs to a top of £111.80 and 243.7p to average 198.3p (+4.7p).

The 204 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £116 for Suffolks and £51 for Swaledales.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd held their annual show and sale of prime Suffolk lambs in conjunction with their weekly sale when 19 pens of three were presented for judging. The championship went to Messrs W&R Baird, Dalhowan, Crosshill for a pen of three averaging 45kg that sold for £100 or 222.2p. The reserve ticket went to Messrs J&D Telfer, Bougang, Ballantrae for three 41kg lambs that averaged 191.9p.

In the commercial ring 1052 prime lambs sold to £99 and 211.4p to average 190.5p (+5.5p), while 100 hoggs levelled at 137.9p (-11.4p).

The 424 cast sheep forward saw over-fat ewes harder to cash, while other types were similar on the week. Top prices on the day for ewes were £141.50 for Texels and £77 for Blackfaces, with the overall average levelling at £77.
