UNITED Auctions sold 1,766 suckled calves at their annual show and sale at Stirling on Monday.

There were 742 heifers that sold to 350.5 pence per kilogramme and averaged 252p (+3.9p on the year), while the 1,024 bullocks peaked at 332.6p and levelled at 266.6p (-9.7p).

Wallets Marts sold 79 store heifers in Castle Douglas on Monday to a top of 209.6p and an average of 196.2p.

At the same time the 54 store bullocks on sale peaked at 226.6p and levelled at 202.3p.

In the rough ring, 114 OTM cattle averaged 106.3p.

There were also 14 heifers with calf-at-foot that sold to £2,250 and averaged £1,942.86, while 14 cows and calves peaked at £1,650 and levelled at £1,367.86.

Bulling heifers sold to £1,300 and averaged £1,153.06 for 40.

The firm then went on to sell 2,247 prime lambs at the same venue yesterday to a top of £75 per head and 175.1p per kg to average 146.3p (-8.4p on the week).

The 629 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £84 for Texels and £59 for Blackfaces.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 28 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of 228p and at an average of 204.5p.

Meanwhile the nine prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 232p and then levelled at 206p.

Three prime, B&W bullocks sold to 178p and averaged 175.5p, while six prime young bulls peaked at 183p and levelled at 164.4p.

In the rough ring, 131 beef cows averaged 114.6p and 145 dairy cows levelled at 84.8p.

Twenty-one bulls averaged 115.3p and 10 clean OTM cattle levelled at 177.8p.

The firm also had a better show for quality of 16 dairy cattle, but due to recent cuts in the price of milk buyers were reluctant to pay a premium for good heifers.

The top price paid on the day was £1,850 for a Holstein Friesian heifer with the final average levelling at £1,441.
