Muller UK & Ireland Group has confirmed that its milk price for April will remain unchanged from the 24.15p per litre it had previously announced it will pay from March 5.

Managing director of Muller Wiseman Dairies Carl Ravenhall said: "We are encouraged by recent signs of improvement in global markets and very much hope that this establishes a trend."

Wallets Marts sold 199 store heifers in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £1315 per head and 251.7p per kg to average £875.05 and 220.8p (+4.8p on the corresponding sale last year), while 394 store bullocks peaked at £1460 and 293.4p to level at £997.97 and 233.2p (+1.5p).

John Swan Ltd sold 68 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 253p and an average of 218.8p (no change on the week), while 25 prime bullocks peaked at 236p and levelled at 215.7p (-1.3p).

In the rough ring 55 beef-type cows averaged 136.3p (n/c) and 5 clean OTM cattle levelled at 171.1p (+11.1p).

The firm also sold 1631 prime hoggs to a top of £109 per head and 232p per kg to average £83.87 and 194p (+7p).

The 397 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £141 for Texels and average £89.19 (+£11.01), while light ewes peaked at£83 for Easi-Care and levelled at £62.63 (+£2.50).

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 25 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 233.5p and an average of 198.2p (-2p), while 26 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 229.5p and levelled at 205.6p (-1.4p). Nine prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 178.5p and averaged 153.2p. Thirteen prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 223.5p and averaged 185.2p (-13.1p), while 51 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 193.5p and averaged 144.2p (-10.6p).

In the rough ring 99 beef cows averaged 139.6p (+0.7p) and 232 dairy cows levelled at 110.7p (+0.3p). Twelve bulls averaged 143.9p (+11.4p).

The firm also sold 1805 prime hoggs to a top of £120 and 300p to average 195.6p (+7.3p).

A small show of 59 cast sheep saw ewes sell to £135.50 for Texels and £89.50 for North Country Cheviots.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 2076 prime hoggs in Ayr yesterday to a top of £100 and 226.2p to average 190.1p (+6.9p). Included in that overall average were 1092 Blackfaces that peaked at 198.7p and levelled at 186.6p.

The firm also had 481 cast sheep forward when all classes met the dearest trade ever seen at the centre. Heavy ewes sold to £132.50 for a pen of Beltex and averaged £97.14, while light ewes peaked at £110 for Lleyns and levelled at £64.89. Rams sold to £155 for a pen of Charollais.
