Producers warn of pork shortage due to feed costs

DAIRY and beef farmers who are currently suffering a squeeze on their margins as a result of soaring feed bills should spare a thought for pig producers, where feed accounts for more than 60% of the cost of production.

The world's pig farmers are warning of a shortage of bacon and pork next year because pig-feed has become unaffordable.

The National Pig Association (NPA) claims governments are becoming increasingly concerned as pig farmers around the world sell their herds because they can no longer afford feed.
