Bad Hair (15)

four stars

Dir: Mariana Rondon

With: Samuel Lange Zambrano, Samantha Castillo

JUNIOR hates his curly hair. His mum, being recently widowed, has other things to worry about. Only Junior's gran seems to feel his pain, and with school photo day looming the boy feels action is required. From such seemingly thin strands does Venezuelan director Mariana Rondon weave a tender, wonderful drama about grief, love, and getting by with a little help from friends - and the right styling equipment.

Point and Shoot (15)

four stars

Dir: Marshall Curry

PART of the always excellent BBC Storyville strand, this is a true life tale of a boy trying to be a man, or his idea of one. Matthew Vandyke seemed like any other Baltimore youth until he had the notion to join the anti-Gaddafi revolution in Libya. Documentary maker Marshall Curry scents a good story and finds one, using interviews with Vandyke, and the footage the wannabe war reporter returned with, to discover what lay behind such a daring, foolhardy mission.

Au Revoir les Enfants (12A)

five stars

Dir: Louis Malle

With: Gaspard Manesse, Raphael Fejto

Runtime: 100 minutes

LOUIS Malle's heartbreaker of a drama, first released in 1987, has now been reissued in a new digital print. Inspired by the young Malle's experiences in wartime France, Au Revoir is the story of two school friends, Julien and Jean, the latter of whom has a secret, one that must be kept at all costs from the Nazi occupiers. A must see from the late Malle (Vanya on 42nd Street).

The Turning (15)

three stars

Dirs: Various

With: Rose Byrne, Cate Blanchett

Runtime: 107 minutes

A POSSE of Australian directors - if that is the correct collective noun - use Tim Winton's titular book as a jumping off point to explore life in the lucky country, or the not so lucky country if some of the stories here are a guide. Starring Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, together with many a lesser known Aussie actor, it is a mixed bag but there are more than a few standouts.
