Doubts over cost of new Scottish taxation system

SENIOR business figures have questioned whether a new Scottish tax system could be set up in a cost effective way.

In a discussion paper, titled Grasping The Thistle produced by Ernst and Young, almost two-thirds of respondents expressed doubts over a new regime.

Several called for evidence the costs of what may be implemented – such as alterations to current tax systems or a separate system brought about by a future constitutional settlement – would be economically justifiable.
