Growth in services sector fuels hope

THE UK's dominant services sector grew strongly in January, a key survey has revealed, raising hopes that the economy might yet avoid recession as early as this quarter.

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply's seasonally-adjusted business activity index for services rose from 54 in December to 56 last month – to signal the fastest growth in this sector in 10 months. And services companies reported their strongest rate of net recruitment since March 2008, although the increase in the workforce was solid rather than spectacular.
