SCOTLAND'S largest cities have been named among the European destinations expected to see strong growth in the hotel sector during the next two years.

Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow were among top six in the UK, beside London, Manchester and Birmingham, for active room pipelines. The Scottish cities were also expected to grow ahead of the long term average.

PwC's latest European hotel forecast suggested the Year of Food and Drink initiative will help fuel demand this year along with major events such as the World Gymnastics Championship, the golf Open Championship and Ricoh Woman's British Championship along with the art world's Turner Prize.

The Scottish sector is also benefiting from the interest in the Scottish referendum vote and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Bruce Cartwright, partnerat PwC in Scotland, said: "Here in Scotland, we're seeing growth driven by a combination of higher average daily rates (ADR) and occupancy levels.

"This could, in part, be attributed to a structural shift towards more branded budget hotels as well as access to online distribution channels and greater propensity by people to travel.

"As we look ahead, there is no doubt that the hotel sector faces plenty of challenges, particularly as a result of economic and geopolitical uncertainties. However, we remain optimistic in its ability to compete, adapt and succeed."
