In 1810, a Scottish minister helped to revolutionise people’s banking - in 2010, can he do it again?

Expect a big airing in Edinburgh next week for one of the early 21st ­century’s most pressing questions: how do we ­provide the world’s ­teeming millions with viable, non-exploitative sources of finance?

On Wednesday, the Church of Scotland and Edinburgh University host a conference -- How a Scottish Minister Changed the Financial Landscape -- in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the launch of what is commonly held to be the world’s first savings bank.
