The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply's purchasing managers' index for UK manufacturing, a composite indicator of activity which includes output, new orders, employment, suppliers' delivery times and stocks of goods purchased, rose from 45.2 in July to 49.5 in August on a seasonally-adjusted basis.
