New wave of support promised for tidal energy

THE Scottish Government is to follow Westminster in beefing up support for the nascent tidal energy industry but wants to cut the subsidy given to large-scale biomass operators.

Under plans announced yesterday, each megawatt-hour of tidal energy generation would receive five renewable obligations certificates (ROCs), against three currently. Each certificate is worth just under £40. The boost for tidal power is in line with changes announced on Thursday by the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
