Scotland recorded a sharp year-on-year drop in the number of patents applied for and granted in 2014, the UK's Intellectual Property Office says.

Applications dropped from 902 to 851 and patents granted fell from 142 to 103. Across the UK, applications increased by 241 to 15,187 while patents dropped by 132 to 2315. IBM had the most patents granted with 309 followed by Dyson with 122.

Campbell Newell, Edinburgh managing partner at IP law firm Marks & Clerk, said Scotland was still performing strongly, with its 103 patents only one less than Wales and Northern Ireland combined.

Trade mark applications in Scotland rose from 2191 to 2219 with registrations up to 1900 from 1892.
