GLASGOW hotels have achieved a fifth consecutive month of year-on-year growth in their overall occupancy rate, writes Ian McConnell.

However, the latest survey of the sector from tourism, travel and hospitality industry specialist LJ Research also shows another sharp decline in occupancy and room rates for Aberdeen hotels as the Granite City continues to be hit hard by the oil and gas sector downturn.

Glasgow hotels achieved an average room rate of £74.58 in October, with Edinburgh recording a figure of £94.91.

Both the Glasgow and Edinburgh hotel sectors achieved a modest year-on-year increase in revenue per available room in October. This measure is calculated by multiplying occupancy by average room rate achieved.

However, Aberdeen hotels recorded a 37 per cent year-on-year decline in revenue per available room in October, to £49.18.
