Booze battle of Europe

Despite the appointment of a pro-minimum pricing Health Secretary in Jeremy Hunt, the drinks trade press reports industry estimates of a 50/50 chance of defeating the proposed legislation, first in Scotland, then nationwide.

First there was the Scotch Whisky Association's two-pronged legal challenge and, last week, Bulgaria became the first EU country to launch a formal challenge to Scotland's plans with the European Commission.

According to Just Drinks, the industry bible, wine-producing southern European countries are "in the queue to join the attack". Just Drinks quotes the Wine and Spirits Trade Association's Gavin Partington, who says: "I can see it getting referred to the European Court of Justice for a ruling."
