Mr Thorburn is an experienced career banker who now has more time for his UK duties. However, he is still just one individual in a situation which appears to have no quick fix.
A three year plan to turn around Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks, which will see 1400 people leaving the organisation, should lead to large cost savings. The big unknown is how the UK economy will perform and the indicators for that are not great.
