AMID the growing cacophony of voices about what must be done to kickstart UK growth, that of Professor Brian Ashcroft stands out as one of those which chimes with reality.

Mr Ashcroft highlights the need to boost demand. Lack of demand is undoubtedly at the root of the problem. And it has been depressed by Chancellor George Osborne's swingeing public spending cuts.

Mr Osborne's cuts to corporation tax have failed to boost investment by businesses.
