It also underlines the weakness of the UK economy, at a time when the Coalition Government at Westminster is carrying on regardless with its austerity programme. This programme, including hundreds of thousands of public sector job losses, swingeing welfare cuts, and a hike in value-added tax, has hammered demand and sent Scotland and the UK as a whole into a double-dip recession.
