Spinning the Falkirk deal

The Scottish Parliament economy committee's investigation into Business Gateway in Falkirk last week was a less than forensic affair, with bluster-prone MSPs struggling to get to the heart of this very Scottish story of municipal power.

In question is Falkirk Council's determination to take over a successful Business Gateway operation – driven by its own ambitions rather than those of the business community. The typically Scottish part involves indifference to the time and money expended on a process which, opponents of the move claim, is designed to dress up bureaucratic fiat as fair process.
