Vinay Agarwal, manager of the First State Indian Subcontinent fund, has deposed Thomas Moore at the top of the Scottish fund manager league table after five months in pole position for the Standard Life Investments star.

Mr Agarwal’s fund is newly categorised as a UK entity, making him eligible for the table of 4138 UK and European managers analysed by Citywire. He is ranked 19 overall and first in the Herald’s Citywire league of fund managers in houses with a significant Scottish presence.

Mr Moore, manager of SLI's £1 billion UK Equity Income Unconstrained fund, maintains his overall ranking at 53 but slips to third in the table, which is based on three-year performance to the end of December. There are 15 AAA ratings for Scottish managers, the same as in the three years to November 30.

Overtaking the SLI star is Ben Russon, whose ranking jumps from 59 to 34, and who takes second place for the third month in a row. Mr Russon is manager of four equity funds at Franklin Templeton – UK Opportunities, UK Blue Chip, UK Managers Focus, and UK Equity Income - and his co-manager Colin Morton jumps from 122 to 85 in the big league to take fifth place.

In fourth place, down from third, is Audrey Ryan, who runs the UK Opportunities, Ethical Equity and Ethical Cautious Managed funds at Kames Capital, rising 90 to 58.

Richard Bullas, whose funds at Franklin include the midcap and smaller companies funds, moves up a place to sixth with a ranking improved from 210 to 154.

Sashi Reddy, manager of the Stewart Investor Asia Pacific and Indian Subcontinent funds, slips from fourth to seventh as he drops from 104 to 157.

Iain Wells and Douglas Scott, who manage the Kames UK Equity Income fund, maintain their new-found places in the top 10, rising from joint 298 to 220 and 221 respectively.

Jacob de Tusch-Lec, who runs the Artemis Global Income and Monthly Distribution funds, slides sharply from 193 to 335 and drops out of the top 10.

Completing the top 10 is Margaret Lawson, co-manager of SVM UK Growth, who moves up from 372 overall to 266, and just behind is SVM Asset Management co-founder Colin McLean, who also manages two funds for Scottish Friendly, climbing from 365 to 297.

Slipping out of the leading pack with overall ranking down from 286 to 386, are Standard Life Investments duo Jacqueline Lowe and Iain McLeod, along with Peter Saacke manager of European and global growth funds at Artemis.
