ROBERT Baltzer, who runs Edinburgh-based Baillie Gifford's High-Yield Bond and Investment Grade Long Bond funds, has risen to first place in The Herald's monthly table of top-performing asset managers working for Scottish investment houses.

Mr Baltzer leapfrogged Neil Veitch, of Edinburgh investment boutique SVM, to claim top spot when the latest investment performance figures for the three years to December 31 were compiled by financial publisher Citywire.

His rise to first position was achieved on the back of an improvement in his UK-wide ranking from 33rd to 15th.

Mr Baltzer graduated as a Master of Mathematics from Durham University in 2001. He joined Baillie Gifford in the same year, and is now an investment manager in the credit team.

The Citywire rankings are based on risk-adjusted performance against relevant benchmarks. Fewer than one-fifth of fund managers in the UK qualify for one of the 288 Citywire ratings. The Herald-Citywire survey covers fund managers working for investment houses with a significant presence in Scotland.

Mr Baltzer is one of nine Baillie Gifford managers to feature in the latest Scottish top flight. Aberdeen Asset Management, following four promotions when the performance figures to December were tallied, also has nine investment managers in the Scottish top table.

Baillie Gifford had 10 Citywire-rated managers in the previous Scottish top table covering the three years to November.

When performance figures for the three years to December were tallied, Baillie Gifford's Patrick Edwardson and Mike Brooks lost their places in the Scottish top flight with a dip in their joint UK-wide ranking from 247th to 291st.

Mick Brewis, who runs Baillie Gifford's American fund, was meanwhile promoted to the top flight with an improvement in his UK-wide position from 426th to 220th.

Chris Bowie, who manages Glasgow-based Ignis's Corporate Bond fund, leapt to second place in Scotland with a significant improvement in his UK-wide position from 105th to 21st.

Mr Veitch, who runs SVM's UK Opportunities, All-Europe Socially Responsible Investment and World Equity funds, slipped to third place in Scotland with a slight deterioration in his UK-wide ranking from 21st to 27th.

Among former leaders of the Scottish top flight, Aberdeen Asset Management Asia equities specialist Hugh Young enjoyed a second consecutive monthly jump up the table with an improvement in his UK-wide ranking from 146th to 67th.
