THE best entrepreneurs based in Scotland are being given the opportunity to win recognition under a prestigious awards programme.

Entrepreneurial Scotland, in association with Deloitte and media partner The Herald, has invited entries for a scheme that will highlight the wealth of business talent in the country.

With the Entrepreneur of the Year and Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year titles up for grabs, the competition for the awards on offer is expected to be fierce.

Peter Vardy of Peter Vardy motor group is current holder of the Entrepreneur of the Year title, which has been won by leading business figures such as Sir Tom Hunter and Jim McColl.

Mike Welch, who developed the Blackcircles tyre retail business, won the Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2014. Mr Welch went on to sell Blackcircles to French giant Michelin in a deal worth £50 million, but intends to stay with the Peebles company and to continue to grow it.

Sandy Kennedy, chief executive of Entrepreneurial Scotland, said the awards highlight the vital role entrepreneurs play, whether they are leading new or well-established businesses.

"We're committed to Scotland becoming the most entrepreneurial society in the world. It's a big ambition but one that we can achieve if we support and encourage our existing and future leaders," said Mr Kennedy.

Richard Slater, partner and head of Entrepreneurial Business for Deloitte in Scotland and a member of the judging panel for the 2015 awards, said they showcase Scotland's business trailblazers and promote the can-do attitude, dynamism and dedication of some of the country's top performers.

He added: "I believe as a country we need to get better at shouting about our entrepreneurial achievements to galvanise and encourage small start-ups just setting off or looking to grow."

The entry form can be downloaded from the Entrepreneurial Scotland website (www.entrepreneurialscotland.com) and must be completed and returned by 12 noon on August 14.

The winners will be announced from a final shortlist of three in each category at an awards dinner at the Thistle Glasgow Hotel on November 25.
