JAMES Donaldson, the Fife-based timber group founded in 1860, has recruited a sixth generation family member to the board.

Michael Donaldson becomes a director of the company chaired by his father Neil, the fifth generation chairman, while grandfather George is honorary president.

Michael joined the company in 2006 and is a general manager in Donaldson Timber Engineering, while younger brother Andrew is a management trainee.

The group said: "Control of the business has passed directly from father to son throughout the 150 years, and this is a trend which looks set to continue."

Donaldson increased underlying pre-tax profit by 27 per cent to £2.5 million last year on turnover up from £105m to £117m, according to accounts filed at Companies House.
