GREEN Highland Renewables has brought in a new chief executive just months after new owners bought the hydro power specialist.

Mark Mathieson, formerly managing director of SSE's networks business, is replacing Richard Round at the Perth business.

In April London based Ancala Partners acquired the small scale hydro scheme developer in a deal believed to be worth millions of pounds.

Until then Green Highland Renewables had been majority owned by the Environmental Energies Fund which was run by the Scottish Investment Bank and Scottish Equity Partners. The business founders Alastair Riddell and Iain Wotherspoon held minority stakes.

Mr Round is said to be keen to pursue other business interests.

Mr Mathieson said: "This is an exciting time to be joining the business. Green Highland Renewables has around 25 projects totalling more than 20 [megawatts] of capacity in operation or under construction.

"The company's new shareholder, Ancala Renewables, has ambitious plans to further grow the business both through GHR's pipeline of development projects as well as acquisitions."

The business, formed in 2007, has its own hydro assets which are located across the Highlands and have a generating capacity of 4.2 megawatts.

It also has a consultancy arm which specialises in the planning, consent and construction for small hydro schemes which typically range from 100 kilowatts to two megawatts.

Duncan Whyte, Green Highland Renewables chairman, wished the outgoing Mr Round well and added: "Mark's experience at the highest level of the energy and utility sector in the UK will help take the business to the next stage of its development."
