Ignis's Bowie remains the top Scot on fund managers' table

BOND specialists have retained their hold on the top spots in The Herald's table of top- performing investment managers working for Scottish houses as Ignis's Chris Bowie kept the number one slot for the fourth consecutive month.

Mr Bowie, manager of the Ignis Corporate Bond fund, stayed ahead of Baillie Gifford's fixed income experts Robert Baltzer and Stephen Rodger, who swapped places to sit in second and third respectively as the trio preserved their monopoly on the top end of the table.

Mr Bowie also kept his spot in the UK top 10, although he slipped from seventh to ninth place when the rankings for the three years to May 31 were compiled by publisher Citywire.Mr Baltzer runs Baillie Gifford's High Yield Bond and Investment Grade Long Bond funds and climbed from 15th to 11th in the UK-wide table.Mr Rodger manages the Corporate Bond and Investment Grade Bond funds. He slipped from 14th to 19th.Edinburgh-based Baillie Gifford continues to be a formidable force on the Scottish fund management scene, securing four of the top 10 spots with Douglas Brodie, manager of its British Smaller Companies fund, and Tom Coutts, who oversees its European fund, taking fourth and seventh place in the Scottish table.It has 12 Citywire-rated managers, down from 13 the previous month after Richard Sneller, manager of the Emerging Markets Growth fund, lost his rating. This puts it ahead of Aberdeen Asset Management, which has seven, the highest ranked of whom is Michael Turner, manager of its Diversified Growth and Managed Distribution funds, who secured fifth spot in the Scottish table.Standard Life Investments has six rated managers, including Edward Legget, manager of its UK Equity High Alpha and UK Equity Unconstrained funds.The Citywire rankings are based on risk-adjusted per- formance against relevant benchmarks. Fewer than one-fifth of fund managers in the UK qualify for Citywire ratings, of which there were 308 last month.
