Scot Alan Keir is the new chief executive of HSBC Bank, reporting to group chief executive Stuart Gulliver, as part of management succession.

Mr Keir, 54, will oversee the group's operations in the UK, continental Europe, Turkey, Bermuda, the Middle East and Africa.

He joined HSBC in 1981 and has worked in the UK and in Asia. He was appointed a group general manager in 2008 and a group managing director and global head of commercial banking in January 2011. Mr Keir succeeds Brian Robertson, 59, who will retire "after 38 years of distinguished and dedicated service", the bank said. He will assist Mr Keir with the transition, and retire early next year after the handover on October 1.

Mr Robertson, the bank's chief executive since 2010, will stay on the board of the bank's businesses in Malta, Turkey, Latin America and North America.

Simon Cooper, 45, another HSBC career banker who joined in 1989, replaces Mr Keir in the group and commercial banking roles. Peter Boyles, 57, chief executive of global private banking, becomes a group managing director. Mohammad Al Tuwaijri, 46, becomes deputy chairman and chief executive of HSBC Middle East and North Africa, succeeding Mr Cooper.

Mr Gulliver said: "These appointments demonstrate the depth of talent we have within HSBC, and the capabilities of our senior managers to move to and from geographic and business leadership roles."
