Carol MacDonald from Troon is a retired saver who has been troubled by the uncertainties surrounding the referendum.

"We have got pensions from five different sources including the state pension, and I am waking up in the middle of the night about it … I think older people are naturally more hesitant and worried about potential change."

She goes on: "What would the position be on UK state pensions - although these would continue to be paid as at present, would they receive index-linked increases if Scotland were independent?"

Mrs Macdonald has also been trying to find out what would happen to holders of Peps, Isas and National Savings products. She says: "Would the UK permit citizens and residents of a foreign country to hold such investments or would they have to be redeemed?"

She notes that NS&I has said people north of the Border would be unable to add to existing holdings, while the position on Isas is less certain.
