GARY Paterson learned the cost of careless spending the hard way - and it has taught him to keep a firm grip on his finances.

The 24-year-old, from Glasgow, who works for University of Strathclyde Students' Association, said: "In the past, I've had quite a lot of bank charges - I've lost thousands over the years."

To ensure it can never happen again, Gary has switched to Co-op Bank's Cashminder Account.

He explained: "It has no overdraft facility and no charges. If you're already short of income, you don't want to waste more."

To keep in funds, he keeps a close eye on spending. "I don't have a credit card or loans, and when I need to buy something I look around for the best deal and use sites like eBay."
