Nev Stokes left npower in search of a better deal after becoming disillusioned with the behaviour of the big energy providers.

The Edinburgh-based web developer said: "I moved into a new flat and was keen to change supplier. I began looking outside the Big Six because of their double digit price and profit rises.

"I saw that Good Energy were 100per cent renewable, so I gave them my details and they organised everything."

Good Energy has come top in the annual customer satisfaction survey carried out by consumers' organisation Which? in three out of the past four years.

Mr Stokes has no cause to regret his decision. He said: "They respond to emails promptly and they have a personal touch to them.

"After a year, it became clear I was paying too much on my monthly direct debit. I contacted them and within a week I had a cheque in my hand."
