SALES at department store John Lewis rose 6.7% to £59.5 million in the week to last Saturday, as colder weather reduced annual growth from the 12.7% seen the previous week.

Glasgow was the UK's best performing store with sales 9.2% ahead after it missed the worst of the weather. Its Aberdeen shop was 0.7% up, but Edinburgh was 1% down.

Shoppers continued to stock up at supermarket division Waitrose in anticipation of sub-zero temperatures, pushing sales up 8.7% to £108.16m.
