MOBILE phone maker Research In Motion has launched its latest BlackBerry smartphones in a bid to win back market share from Apple and other handset makers.

The Z10 and Q10 phones, with new BlackBerry 10 operating system software, were unveiled at simultaneous events around the world yesterday in London, Toronto, Dubai and New York.

The Z10 is a full touchscreen model while the Q10 has an integrated QWERTY keyboard.

The software is centred around the BlackBerry Hub which allows users to amalgamate information from multiple sources, such as Facebook and Twitter, in "real time".

The company also unveiled its upgraded appstore which it claims will have 70,000 apps for users to download plus the ability to buy music, films and television programmes.

Thorsten Heins, president and chief executive, said: "We intend to lead the move from mobile communication to mobile computing."

BlackBerry's share of the global smartphone market was 3.4% in the fourth quarter of 2012, which was down from 20% three years previously.

In Europe, BlackBerry is headed by Strathclyde University graduate Stephen Bates.
