LORD Smith of Kelvin has spent almost £100,000 on shares in SSE.

The chairman of the utility giant bought 7350 ordinary shares yesterday at a price of £13.51 per share. That took Lord Smith's holding in the Perth business to 29,950 shares.

He joined SSE in 2003 as a non-executive director and has held the chairman post since January 2005.

The 69-year-old is also chairman of the Green Investment Bank and the organising committee of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

SSE's shares closed up 1p, or 0.1%, at 1347p.
