Visorcat, the Dunbar-based developer of a windscreen wiper for motorcyclists, is raising new funding to target UK retailers and launch in Germany.

Its visor-cleaning system, which fits onto the back of the rider's gauntlet, was launched a year ago after trialling with the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

It has won backing from motorcycle clubs and associations, but has yet to get sales moving, director Jill Boulton said. "What we are concentrating on now is to try to get the product into shops, and to do that we are going to move production from England up to Scotland to reduce costs," she said.

Visorcat was in discussions over a second funding round from investors said Ms Boulton, one of three owner-directors, who in 2010 used a £10,000 enterprise award to begin developing the business and then attracted backing from private investors and Scottish Enterprise.

The company has also joined forces with Innovi Business Growth, an Edinburgh-based consultancy, in an export drive. Ian Murphy of Innovi said: "As a motorcyclist myself, I immediately recognised the benefits of this product and we are confident that German motorcyclists will be equally impressed with the Visorcat."

Ms Boulton added: "The natural thing would be to start in your home market but we have had interest from all over the world including the US."

The product fits a cleaning fluid reservoir, absorbent sponge, and twin wiper blades, into a unit housed on the back of a left glove. The sponge is covered by a flap which automatically opens. Visorcat hopes to locate production in Fife.
