WALLETS Marts had a small show of just 10 store heifers forward at their fortnightly sale in Castle Douglas yesterday that averaged £931.50 per head and 215.9p per kg, while a couple of store bullocks fetched £1,055 apiece or 242p per kg.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd had 1,651 prime lambs forward at Ayr yesterday, which being nearly 300 less than last week helped to maintain rates. Top prices on the day were £110 per head and 245.1p per kg with the final average levelling at 213.2p (-0.6p on the week).

There were also 575 cast sheep when heavy ewes sold to £146 for Texels and averaged £90.02, while light ewes peaked at £79 for Blackfaces and levelled at £55.17.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 41 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 252p and an average of 229p (-2p), while 22 prime bullocks peaked at 249p and levelled at 215p (16p).

In the rough ring 54 beef cows sold to £1419.60 per head and 187p per kg to average 144p (-10p).

There were also 2015 prime lambs that sold to £122 and 241.6p to average 212.3p (-10.2p).

The 395 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £121 for Texels and average £93, while light ewes peaked at £93 for Cheviots and levelled at £71.

The firm also sold seven prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 236.5p and an average of 205.5p (+6.5p), while 10 prime bullocks peaked at 231.5p and levelled at 205.2p (+0.6p). Fifty-four prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 227.5p and averaged 198.8p (+5.1p), while 32 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 178.5p and levelled at 151.8p (+3.4p).

In the rough ring 138 beef cows sold to 219.5p and averaged 147.9p (-4.6p), while 205 dairy cows peaked at 172.5p and levelled at 116.1p (no change).

There were also 1980 prime lambs that sold to £129.50 and 275.8p to average 217.3p (-6.2p).

The 165 cast ewes forward were all heavy types that sold to £119.50 for Texels and averaged £79.33.

Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 15 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 256p and an average of 242p (no change), while four prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 230p and levelled at 226p (+2p). Four prime, B&W bullocks sold to 168p and averaged 157p (no comparison).

In the rough ring 40 beef cows averaged 135p (+1p) and 48 dairy cows levelled at 114p (+2p). A couple of bulls averaged 135p.

The firm also sold 1950 prime lambs to a top of £110.50 and 247.6p to average 212.7p (-5.1p).

A big show of 476 heavy cast ewes sold to £143.50 for Texels and averaged £72.17, while 207 light ewes peaked at £64.50 for Cheviots and levelled at £46.49.
