C&D Auction Marts ltd sold 5104 store lambs in Longtown yesterday. Top prices and averages for selected breeds: Suffolks to 376 and averaged £60.11 (-£3.95 on the week); Texels £74 and £58.03 (-£2.84); Charollais £65 and 352.67 (-£11.40); Mules £67.50 and £53.31 (-£5.90).

Wallets Marts held its summer show of prime lambs in Castle Douglas yesterday when 11 pens of 3 competed, as well as an inaugural young handlers show. The champion's rosette went to a pen of 3 Beltex from Gelston Castle farms that weighed 36kg apiece and went on to fetch £110, while the reserve went to another trio of Beltex from the same home.

There were 6 young handlers showing lambs with the championship being awarded to Abbie Tait, Cullinlaw competing in the 12-16 years-old class with a 38kg Texel lamb that sold for £115. The reserve ticket went to William Marchant, Clonhie competing in the 4-7 years-old class with a 38kg Beltex lamb that fetched £107.

Overall the 1607 prime lambs forward averaged £81.14 or 193.4p per kg (-3.6p on the week).

The firm also had 267 cast sheep forward when ewes sold to £95 for Texels and £48 for Blackfaces.
