WALLETS Marts held their annual show and sale of spring-born suckled calves in Castle Douglas on Saturday when 237 heifers sold to £880 per head and 333.3p per kg to average £636.19 and 242.7p (+£57.30 and 19.2p on the year), while 441 bullocks peaked at £1,210 and 341p to level at £779.60 and 260.6p (+£63.17 and 12.9p).

The firm went on to sell 31 store heifers at the same venue yesterday to a top of £1,100 and 209p to average £830.64 and 173.1p, while 33 store bullocks peaked at £1,180 and 232.1p to level at £914.69 and 190.6p.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 2,362 prime lambs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £94 per head and 204.8p per kg to average 166.3p (+3p on the week). A large show of 983 cast sheep saw heavy ewes sell to £136.5p for a pen of Texels and average £66.94, while light/export type ewes peaked at £46.50 for Blackfaces and levelled at £29.99.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 31 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 259p and an average of 235p (-7p), while 24 prime bullocks peaked at 254p and levelled at 223p (+7p).

In the rough ring 47 beef cows sold to 189p and averaged 134p (-9p).

There were also 1,853 prime lambs that sold to £104 and 210.8p to average 173p (+4.5p).

The 538 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £85 for Texels and average £65, while light ewes peaked at £75 for Cheviots and levelled at £36.

The firm also sold 20 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 227.5p and an average of 191.4p (+8p), while 22 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 228.5p and levelled at 190.9p.

Seven prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 169.5p and averaged 145.5p (-13p).

Fifty-five prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 234.5p and averaged 192.7p (+9.1p), while 41 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 184.5p and levelled at 153.3p (+2.1p).

In the rough ring 132 beef cows sold to 207.5p and averaged 131p (-4.7p), while 256 dairy cows peaked at 166.5p and levelled at 92p (-3.3p).

Eight bulls sold to 149.5p and averaged 133.6p (+18p).

There were also 2604 prime lambs that sold to £106.80 and 242.7p to average 171.6p (-7.2p).

A good show of 193 heavy cast ewes sold to £103.50 for Texels and averaged £64.89, while 74 light ewes peaked at £46.50 for Cheviots and levelled at £31.22.
