WHIRLWIND Renewables is poised to begin work on a new wind farm in Caithness after securing bank funding worth more than £20 million.

The company will begin site preparation work for the Achlachan Wind Farm, which will involve the installation of five Senivon, two mega-watt turbines, in the coming weeks.

It is expected that the wind farm, which is due to be operational by this October, will generate enough energy to power around 8,400 homes.

Clydesdale Bank has backed North of England-based Whirlwind with a term loan of £12.75m, alongside ancillary facilities of £8m, for the project.

Whirlwind director Tom Surman said: “We have a wide range of experience developing onshore wind projects of all sizes, and we are delighted that we are about to commence construction on Achlachan Wind Farm.

“We have been active in Caithness since 2007 and we have been fortunate to receive the support from the local community.”
