A FIRM of Glasgow architects is behind the new £3 million Travelodge hotel near the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in the city's Govan area.

Mosaic Architecture and Design has designed the 60-bedroom hotel on the site once occupied by the Alexander Stephen and Sons shipyard. The three-storey hotel, which will incorporate a bar-café on the ground floor, is due for completion early next year. It is located at the junction of Linthouse Road and Govan Road with its southern corner facing directly on to the main access route into the new Hospital.

Mosaic director Neil Haining said: “As the site enjoys a prominent position within its urban context, it provides the opportunity to form a gateway building to this mixed-use regeneration site. A mixture of planting, shared surfaces and car parking will be used to integrate the hotel with a neighbouring village green as part of Linthouse Point.”

The new hotel forms part of a national expansion programme by Travelodge to create 21 new hotels across Scotland, representing a £100 million investment and up to 400 new jobs. Other Travelodge hotels in Glasgow have been earmarked for sites in the west end, city centre, the SEC, Silverburn and in the east end near the M8.

Travelodge became Britain’s first value hotel brand when it launched in the UK in 1985. It is now the UK’s largest independent hotel brand, with more than 540 hotels and 42,000 guest bedrooms.
