MESSRS Craig Wilson Ltd sold 18 prime heifers yesterday at Ayr to a top of 243p per kg and an average of 219.2p, while a couple of prime bullocks peaked at 198p and levelled at 196.5p.

In the rough ring 127 beef cows averaged 138.2p and 76 dairy cows levelled at 116.9p.

The firm also had 107 beef-breeding cattle forward at their monthly sale, when top prices and averages were as follows: Heifers with calves-at-foot to £2,700 and averaged £1,674.24 for 65; cows and calves £2,380 and £1,386.25 for eight; in-calf heifers £1,700 and £1,650 for two; bulling heifers £1,100 and £973.33 for 18; bulls to 2,800gns (twice) for Limousins and averaged £2,261.25 for 14.

Wallets Marts held their annual summer show and sale of prime lambs in Castle Douglas yesterday when 10 pens of five were presented for judging. The winning ticket went to a pen of Texels from Messrs Watson, Slatehouse that weighed 42.2kg each and went on to sell for £102 apiece. Overall, the 702 prime lambs forward sold to £114 per head and 241.7p per kg to average 207.8p (-7.8p on the week).
