THE National Tyres and Autocare chain owned by Scots entrepreneur Alan Revie, has underlined its appetite for expansion following another profitable year for the business.

On the company’s website National Tyres says it is in a key position to grow and is looking for prominent roadside sites across the UK.

The 235-strong chain lists 89 cities and towns as priority locations for expansion. The six locations in Scotland listed include Bearsden, Irvine and Musselburgh.

The latest accounts for the business filed at Companies House show the firm maintained operating profits at around £6m in the year to 31 December.

Sales increased by around three per cent annually to £127.4m from £124.2m.

The company has benefited from a period of strong growth in the number of vehicles on the road in the UK, partly fuelled by the availability of cheap credit.

The Department for Transport said a record 3.3m new vehicles were registered for the first time in Great Britain in 2016, two per cent higher than the previous peak in 2003.

The success of National Tyres has cemented the standing of Mr Revie, 58, as one of Scotland’s most successful entrepreneurs

He led a £9m buyout of the then loss-making business from German tyre giant Continental in 2002.

The young Mr Revie started in the trade as a fitter in 1977.

National Tyres is a subsidiary of Glasgow based Axle Group Holdings, which has interests in other motor trade businesses.
