MARMALADE and jam maker Mackays has unveiled plans to invest £3.8 million to increase the scale of its business premises by 50 per cent.

The Arbroath-based company said the investment would enable it to introduce new product lines to its existing factory. It will also create a dedicated distribution and packaging facility.

Family-owned Mackays, which produces Dundee Marmalade, said it would put up £3m of the money for the investment, with £875,000 funded from a European grant.

Martin Grant, managing director of Mackays, said: “The expansion announcement rounds off a fantastic year for Mackays. With our business turnover up seven per cent, which includes an increase of 35 per cent in export, we are in great shape and looking forward with excitement to the year ahead.”

The company, which employs 180 people, makes nine marmalades, nine preserves, and two curds.

It highlighted the fact it “stays true to its values of producing small authentic batches for a quality homemade taste”.

All of Mackays’ products are made using steam-heated, copper-bottomed pans.
