C&D Auction Marts Ltd sold 133 store heifers in Dumfries yesterday to a top of 270.8p per kg and an average of 210.1p (+2.1p on the fortnight), while 223 store bullocks peaked at 280.5p and levelled at 219.4p (+0.5p). Four store bulls sold to 260.6p and averaged 230.4p (-6.1p).

The firm also held its special May sale of beef-breeding cattle when the top prices and averages were as follows: Cows with calf-at-foot to £2,200 and averaged £1,492.22 for 42; heifers with calves £2,150 and £1,780 for 58; bulling heifers £1490 and £955 for 315; bulls £3,000 and £2,200 for 10.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 1020 prime hoggs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £130 per head and 283.7p per kg to average 230.3p (+7.9p on the week), while 100 prime lambs peaked at £145 and 334p to level at 284.2p (-11.4p).

Cast sheep met a sharper trade on the week with 323 heavy cast ewes selling to a top of £135 for Texels and averaging £89.20, while 201 light/export-type ewes peaked at £82.50 for Blackfaces and levelled at £56.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 37 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 250p and an average of 229p (+3p), while 35 prime bullocks peaked at 259p and levelled at 228p (+8p). A prime bull fetched 222p.

In the rough ring 63 beef cows sold to 195p and averaged154p (+5p).

There were also 850 prime hoggs that sold to £167 and 285.7p to average 245.8p (no change), while 70 prime lambs peaked at £168 and 310.6p to level at 295.5p (-7.5p).

The 376 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £141 for Texels and average £106, while light ewes peaked at £89 for Blackfaces and levelled at £61.

The firm also sold 13 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 239.5p and an average of 201.4p (-19.2p), while 35 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 231.5p and levelled at 204.4p (-9.8p). A prime, dairy-bred bullock fetched 160p. Forty-five prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 243.5p and averaged 202.2p (+7.4p), while 42 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 196.5p and levelled at 163.1p (+7p).

In the rough ring 138 beef cows sold to 217.5p and averaged 149.2p (-0.3p), while 232 dairy cows peaked at 159.5p and levelled at 114.3p (-6.2p). Twenty-four bulls sold to 170.5p and averaged 137.7p (+11.5p).

There were also 1603 prime hoggs that sold to £143.80 and 290.5p to average 243.7p (-4.4p), while 70 prime lambs peaked at £156.80 and 339.5p to level at 299.2p (+18.1p).

The 104 heavy cast ewes forward sold to £118.50 for Texels and average 393.12, while 18 light ewes peaked at £89.50 for Hill Cheviots and levelled at £39.55.
