THE Ackergill Tower estate near John O’Groats has been put up for sale on behalf of the founder of bed retailer Dreams, with a price tag of £3.9 million.
The 15th century tower is being marketed on behalf of Mike Clare, who founded Dreams in the mid-1980s and sold the company for more than £200m in 2008, by property consultancy Knight Frank.
Knight Frank is also marketing the 19th century Solent Forts, No Man’s Fort, Spitbank Fort and Horse Sand Fort, between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, on behalf of Mr Clare with a guide price of £11m. It noted the forts dated back more than 150 years “when it was feared that the French, led by Napoleon III, would invade”.

The original Ackergill Tower is believed to date from 1475. It was extended in the mid-19th century by Scottish architect David Bryce, and renovated this century.

Knight Frank notes this historic Highland estate is set in 30 acres of its own grounds, and currently operates as a hotel.
It adds that the property is "capable of operating as a hotel, private residence or an exclusive use, corporate and entertainment venue”.
